Andrew Luck Retires from the NFL

Updated: May 21, 2020

On August 24th at about 8:30 pm, it was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Andrew Luck has informed the Colts that he will be retiring from the NFL. Luck had a string of bad injuries including a lacerated kidney, a shoulder Labrum tear (which sidelined him for nearly 2 years) and a recent ankle injury. The news of Andrew Luck retiring from the NFL is very shocking to me and it is huge news to the NFL and to the Titans.

This situation is similar to that of Jake Locker but on a MUCH larger scale. Heading into the 2019 season, Andrew Luck was one of my picks for MVP and I wasn’t counting out the Colts to make a deep run in the playoffs. I covered the Colts and made my predictions in this article. For the Colts, the retirement of Andrew Luck means that Jacoby Brisset will be the starting quarterback. When Andrew Luck was sidelined in 2017, we saw that Brissett is a good quarterback and he is much better than your average backup, I predicted a 10-6 season for the Titans in this article. I predicted that the Titans would lose both games to the Colts because I could not see the Titans beating Andrew Luck and the Colts. Andrew Luck has never lost to the Titans, he was 11-0 in his 7 year career. I would not be surprised if the Titans won both meetings against the Colts as they did in 2017. The Colts are not the same team without Andrew Luck. I think Marcus Mariota is now the best Quarterback in the AFC South. This is an unpopular opinion but I think Mariota is poised for a breakout year. For the Titans, this makes the chance of a playoff berth much more likely. The Titans now have a much better chance of competing for the division, rather than fighting for a wildcard spot. In other news, Texans RB Lamar Miller tore his ACL in the preseason game against the Cowboys. The Texans will probably be competing for the division and Miller's injury is very unfortunate.

It is likely that Andrew Luck was fed up with the beating his body took while playing in the NFL. I feel very bad for Luck because he clearly had a great amount of talent and just suffered many severe injuries. Luck may get a coaching job, but he also has many passions outside of Football such as his book club. This news is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. This news is huge for the Colts, the Titans, the AFC, and the NFL as a whole. There is a press conference being held on Sunday to make the retirement official.

This opens the door for the Titans and for other AFC teams. The Titans are now in a much better position heading into the 2019 season.
